Gaining clients can be the hardest and easiest part of your business, depending on how you look at it. If you look at it as ‘sales’, that can be daunting.
I developed the mindset of belief. When I spoke to people about my business and the services I provided, I really believed (and still do) that I can help change their lives for the better.
I believe I genuinely help people, so when I speak to potential clients, if they choose to utilise my services, great. If they are not interested, then they are simply not the client for me.
I have clients who are in the middle of transitions, divorce, relationship breakups, downsizing, upsizing or starting businesses whilst working from home. I also had a lot of busy mums who are time-poor and fed up with their clutter.
Before you find the clients though, you must know who you want to offer your Decluttering and Organising services to.
Knowing your target audience and defining their challenges is crucial.
It is important to know who your ideal client is. Knowing this will help you refine your marketing message. Thus identifying where your ideal client is and how to approach and attract them to your business.
Who requires your service? Are they-
Are your ideal clients a mix of the above or do you want to niche down and only service one particular group?
Do you know what your clients pain points are? If you do, then this is where the marketing of your services start.
Specific to your Decluttering services, are your clients-
Once you have identified where your clients are in their journey, your in a position of knowledge to provide solutions that are customised to their needs.
YOUR WEBSITE – Do you have a professional website offering your Decluttering services? How are you showcasing your services? Do you have any before and after photos? Have you received any testimonials? If you are just starting out, declutter a friends or family members space and take photos before and after, in return for a testimonial.
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION – Have you optimised your content for search engines to ensure potential clients can find you easily?
SOCIAL MEDIA – Do you have a presence on any social media platform like Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest where you share tips and display images of your work?
2. SCHOOL, SPORTS CLUBS, EXERCISE CLASSES, CHILDCARE, CHURCH, HOBBIES
You can meet potential clients anywhere – at school drop off or pick up, at your childcare centre, in church, an exercise class or your book club. There are so many places where your ideal client frequents. Your services can easily sell themselves. They are not complex and do not need any explanation as most people know what a Decluttering and Professional Organiser does.
All you need to do is start with hello and be genuinely interested in people. The rest is easy.
3. PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS
When I was first starting out, I joined a local BNI (Business Networking International), which is the equivalent of a business group.
A BNI is particular in that they only accept only 1 individual from a specific profession. For example, if I was a dentist, they only accepted 1 dentist in their group. You may have one in your area or similar organisation.
They are great to network with potential clients and get the word out about your services.
Whether they are held online or in real life, they provide great opportunities to learn about events in your local area where your ideal client may be found.
4. LOCAL MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES – NEWSPAPERS, FLYERS, NOTICE BOARDS
You can also get the word out about your services by advertising. Whether this is free or paid, you may find potential clients contact you from classified ads, or flyers that you stick up at your local library, supermarket board, or local health food store.
Local partnerships can work where you engage with a business that also provides home services (eg Window Cleaning Company). They can promote your work to their clients and you do the same in return for them.
5. LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND RELATED EVENTS
Your local government may have opportunities for you to talk about your services in monthly meet ups. The Chamber of Commerce is a great place to promote your services in their local catchups and meet potential clients and collaborators.
There are many ways to find clients for your decluttering services and it can be as easy as saying hello to the person next to you whilst you are waiting for your morning coffee. Just be friendly and ask the other person, what do they do? This usually starts the ball rolling and quite soon, you will be chatting about your business.
It really just takes one client to make things happen. Focus on the one person you can help. It makes all the difference.
