The Declutter Institute

The Art and Science of Decluttering

It is not rocket science – cleaning out things that you no longer want or need. Removing excess or items that no longer perform their original function does not take a phd.

But to do that for somebody else, well that is a different story.

Because it means truly understanding what they want in their lives and in their homes. It means appreciating what is important to them, and what they can let go of to gain the peace that they seek.

You may observe someones home and see thing are ‘out of place’ or ‘don’t have a home within the home’, but decluttering for someone else really should be approached, in the first instance as the original declutter.

The first declutter and minimisation that is the major change to their space. It is the first one that hopefully will ‘take’. It does not mean that it will always be kept orderly, or neat and tidy.

It means that this is the the first foray into changing how their house feels.

This should never been underestimated. Because in changing how someones house flows, how the energy moves through out the space, this has an impact.

On a conscious level, sure there are things that are no longer being tripped over or shoved into cupboards.

But on a deeper level, the reduction of unnecessary items can impact a persons psyche.

The Financial Impact

For example, on a financial level, when a clients home is properly decluttered they may no longer feel the need to-

  • Purchase new items for a space in their home that now looks and feels organised and complete.
  • Buy extra things like clothes for themselves or their loved ones because they have found many that have been hidden away or under utilised.
  •

When items are uncovered or brought out into the open, it removes a sense of scarcity and generally replaces this with a feeling of abundance.

Looking at all the things they have change a previous feeling of scarcity to one where they see, feel and  know how much they really do have. The impact can reduce that feeling of needing to have more.

In a world that is highly focused on consumerism, this is the first step in taking back control.

The Emotional Consequences

Never underestimate how much a cluttered house can impact a clients mental health.

It is natural that people feel a lot calmer when they are in surrounds that are ordered, purposeful and simple.

But when a client lives in a space day to day that is quietly chaotic, this has a huge impact on their mental load without the visible signs.

Common phrases like –

‘I will clean that up later’

‘ yes I will get rid of that in the holidays’

‘I will donate this or throw that out on the weekend’

….or ‘

‘I don’t have time to do that now’

…these phrases mean that the client is telling themselves, they don’t have time in their lives.

That right there is insidious creep of  overwhelm. This not only means that your client is seeing the chaos, but they are also telling themselves they don’t have time.

This adds to a bank of overwhelm and stress which has physical and emotional affects.

When you support a client by decluttering their home and  reducing their overwhelm, you are  bringing such a positive effect to their world.

You are bringing an emotional balance to their home while simultaneously, supporting them to live their best lives.

Emotionally, the client may feel-

  • they are more comfortable within it. Almost like they are seeing their home again through new eyes and loving it.

  • A greater desire to invite friends into their home now that there is a sense of order and calm within it.

  • or experience a deeper connection with their creative side because they have more time to do the things they love.

Physically, when a client has less items to move around, clean up or fix, then that is a time-saving opportunity right off the bat. For example, if a client had a cupboard in their Childs room that  is always overflowing with clothes and toys – once it is decluttered, there is no need for the push  and shove to keep things in their and quickly close the door.

The Lasting Effects of Decluttering

Long after you have left your clients home, your client is likely to have changes within both their home and psyche that undoubtably reaches beyond their house.

We know when someones life is changed for the better, this enables them to go out into the world happier, more relaxed and joyful.

Their home is now their sanctuary, a place that is now streamlined, organised, efficient and restorative.
